What is CranioSacral Therapy?

CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is like a cleanse and a massage for your nervous system. CST is a whole-body therapy, done fully-clothed, using very light touch to dial down the body’s stress response. This allows your nervous system to self-correct and makes it easier for your whole body to come to a place of balance.

CST is helpful for stress, physical and emotional trauma, headaches and migraines, TMJ dysfunction, traumatic brain injury, back pain, chronic pain, chronic illnesses, and for clients who have tried everything else. CST can have profound effects on specific areas of pain, as well as your ability to maintain a healthy nervous system, and on your overall health.

SomatoEmotional Release (SER) is an advanced form of CST which uses deep listening to the physical cues of your nervous system in conjunction with dialoguing. Combining these tools allows us to tap into your own inner wisdom to uncover what you need at that moment, in order to resolve trauma that’s gotten trapped in your tissues. SER can support your therapy process and allow you to find resolution more completely, and with more ease.

SER only happens when you and your system choose it – I never induce a client to experience a SomatoEmotional Release or to work in any way they are not ready for.

CranioSacral therapy can be deeply supportive of your overall healing journey – whether you are working more on the physical or on the emotional level. This work pairs well with work you might be doing with a psychotherapist or counselor, a nutritionist, a Somatic Experiencing practitioner, chiropractor, acupuncturist, or any other medical provider.

Although CranioSacral work is very gentle, it can sometimes feel intense, if your system is ready to make significant changes. Every session is different, depending on what your system needs at that moment. Descriptions of first sessions range from, “the only time I’ve truly felt calm in the last 26 years,” to “it was like being in free fall," to “it’s like being in heaven and then you have to come back”…and everything in between.

Want to nerd out with more details? We work with connective tissue like fascia, the rhythm of the cleansing cerebrospinal fluid, and the very subtle ways that our cranial bones relate to each other and the rest of our bodies.
